Financial Aid

Financial aid is available to help eligible students and their families meet college costs. We encourage you to apply for aid if you believe you will need assistance in order to attend the University of Michigan. The University has a long-standing commitment to meeting the demonstrated financial need of eligible Michigan resident undergraduates. For students from outside the state of Michigan, other resources, such as private scholarships, and/or loan programs, may be necessary to supplement the financial aid available.

How to Apply for Aid

To be considered for all aid programs, entering freshmen must complete the following applications (use estimated tax information, if necessary).

Complete the College Scholarship Service (CSS) Financial Aid PROFILE as soon as possible after October 1 to be considered for need-based University grants and scholarships. Be sure to list CSS Code 1839 so that a record will be sent to the University of Michigan.
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1 (and preferably by February 15) to be considered for need-based and non-need-based federal and state grants, scholarships, loans, and Work-Study. Be sure to list Federal School Code 002325 so that a record will be sent to the University of Michigan.

For need-based scholarship consideration, including the Michigan Competitive Scholarship, the Office of Financial Aid (OFA) must receive your FAFSA and PROFILE information by March 1. To be considered for all other aid programs, OFA must receive your FAFSA and PROFILE information by April 30.
