Please help the admissions committee get to know you and how you think in your own words. Choose one of the following topics to address in an essay (2-3 typed pages).

  • A memorable mentoring experience you’ve had with a child or young person (perhaps as a tutor, camp counselor, or volunteer)
  • An important incident from your life as a learner (at school or in another context)
  • An encounter with a teacher who made a positive or negative impression on you (at school or in another context)

In the personal statement you should first describe the experience and the people who were central to it. Then reflect on the significance of the event, using one or more of the following questions as a springboard.

  • Thinking of yourself as a future teacher, why might it be valuable for you to remember this experience?
  • Thinking of yourself as a future teacher, do you now understand this event differently than you did at the time?
  • Thinking of yourself as a future teacher, what aspects of this episode puzzle you or raise questions in your mind?

  • Please be sure that your personal statement concentrates on analyzing the significance of the event, as opposed to remaining at the level of description.

Teaching Major Essay
