Your Role as an Alumni Student Recruiter

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact Phyllis Taylor at the Alumni Association at [email protected] or 734-764-2316.

As an Alumni Student Recruiter (ASR), most of your time will be spent connecting with admitted students. You can discuss your positive experiences at U-M, answer their questions, and generally be a resource for them as they make their enrollment plans.

When you receive a roster of admitted students, please reach out to each student by email to introduce yourself as an alumni volunteer. In this initial email, you should also arrange a time when you can call and chat with the student. Be sure to include your contact information in the email to aid the coordination of future communication.

ASR Calendar

The majority of your recruiting time and effort will be spent in February through April, contacting admitted students, sharing your U-M story, and encouraging them to enroll at U-M. Below is a yearly calendar of events with further information regarding how your role works within the admissions cycle.

Please note, this calendar is subject to change.

Winter

Late January-early February

Early action applicants will receive their decisions by the end of January. Contact admitted students to congratulate them and share your experience about how Michigan has positively impacted your life.

Questions about next steps can be directed to their territory counselor or the appropriate office (housing, orientation, etc.). The contact information for these frequently contacted offices on campus can be found on the Quick Reference Resources page.

Spring

The final recruiting push before the national May 1 enrollment deposit deadline.

Mid March - April

Host or volunteer at an Admitted Student Reception. Each spring we host Admitted Student Receptions around Michigan with a few locations out of state as well. They are designed to congratulate admitted students and encourage them to attend Michigan. In addition to these OUA-hosted events, we strongly encourage out-of-state alumni to work with their local club to host a special event to honor admitted and enrolled students. This could be hosted by your local alumni club in partnership with other ASRs in the area or on your own. The reception may be elaborate or modest, and gives admitted students the opportunity to meet others in their area and ask any final questions they may have about Michigan. Planning this event early is important. If you are interested in hosting a reception, please email us at [email protected].

Summer

Gear up for the next year.

May - early July

Sign up to be a new or continuing ASR volunteer. We will reinstate ASRs who paused for a year as their child applied to U-M. We also ask those with a rising senior interested in applying to U-M to step down for the following year.

May - August

Host a Summer Send-off to get the students who have committed to Michigan excited to start in the fall. This could be hosted by your local alumni club, in partnership with other ASRs in the area, or on your own.
