Welcome to 10 Questions for an Admissions Counselor, an occasional series that spotlights some of the talented and passionate people who travel near and far to recruit new Wolverines for the University of Michigan.
Meet Karrie Inman, an Admissions Counselor originally from Rhode Island. Karrie graduated from Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Psychology and is looking forward to the upcoming admissions season.
1. What do you like most about your job?
I love being able to interact with prospective students and see them through the college process. Guiding students along the way, and being an outlet for support is especially rewarding when you are there for each step of the process- applying to enrolling.
2. What is your favorite thing about the University of Michigan?
Seeing the block M wherever you go. With the largest living alumni base, Michigan is present all over the world. You know that you share a bond with someone you just see walking by on the street with a block M shirt or hat.
3. What is a common question you are asked by prospective students?
Michigan is so big, how do I make it feel small? I love answering this question because you can get students truly excited for Michigan! Although Michigan has a large number of undergraduate students, there is something for everyone at Michigan. I tell them that they’re going to be meeting so many people within the first week and that they’re all in the same situation as you- they also want to make friends. Once you start meeting new people in the residence halls, classrooms, and organizations, you’ll begin to find a home on campus.
4. What is your favorite building or spot on U-M’s campus?
Yost Ice Arena. The exterior has beautiful architecture, but I mostly cherish the memories I’ve had throughout college inside of it. I met some of my best friends playing hockey at U of M and on the ice is where I spent the majority of my nights and weekends. In fact, we’d even go there to study because it would be a guaranteed spot that was not crowded.
5. What is something you wish you knew before your freshman year?
It’s ok to feel homesick and it will take time to adjust in college, but that the people you meet and the experiences you have will benefit you so much. So don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and try new things, especially with classes and organizations.
6. What is the most memorable class you took in college?
The most memorable class I elected was through the School of Kinesiology- Athletic Contests and Contested Spaces in Israel with Professor Rosentraub. For this course, we traveled to Israel and Jordan for three weeks and held sport camps for children.
7. Do you still keep in touch with any of your college roommates?
I keep in touch with all of them, and I’m still living with one of my college roommates, Jenna. Her and I are best friends, played ice hockey in college together, and now both work in Ann Arbor.
8. What would you do on a perfect Saturday in Ann Arbor?
On a perfect Saturday in Ann Arbor, it would be a football saturday- the temperature in the low 70s, my family would be here visiting for the game, and Michigan wins!
9. What is your favorite thing to do in Ann Arbor that doesn’t cost money?
Attend one of Michigan’s D1 sports that’s not football, basketball, or ice hockey. I especially love the women’s softball games. The energy athletes bring to the field, court, or ice is phenomenal and entertaining as they represent the block M.
10. What is your most-used emoji?
Smiley face with sunglasses.
