Welcome to 10 Questions for an Admissions Counselor, an occasional series that spotlights some of the talented and passionate people who travel near and far to recruit new Wolverines for the University of Michigan.
1. What is your favorite thing about the University of Michigan?
Our students. We read the applications and know how amazing they are, but I am blown away every day by the things our students are doing. Their excitement and enthusiasm is contagious.
2. What do you like most about your job?
Working with my admissions colleagues! Our office is full of great people who are really passionate about this university and bringing in an amazing freshman class.
3. What is a common question you are asked by prospective students?
A lot of students are really interested in meeting or interviewing with me. Unfortunately with 60,000+ applications, that’s not something we are able to do, so we encourage that personal side to come out in your application essays.
4. What is your favorite building or spot on U-M’s campus?
The Nichols Arboretum or the “Arb.” I used to live right next to the Arb and the Huron River, and it’s a great spot to go for a walk/run on one of their many different nature paths.
5. What is something you wish you knew before your freshman year?
I wish I knew that it was okay to explore things and really go outside my comfort zone. I went to college undecided and strayed toward the classes and majors that seemed familiar to me, but I sometimes regret not trying things that would have been new and outside of what I thought I liked.
6. What is the most memorable class you took in college?
One semester I took a studio art class to fulfill a general requirement. It allowed me to mix up my schedule and instead of just writing papers and studying, I was able to spend hours down at the studio creating awesome things.
7. What is your favorite thing to do in Ann Arbor that doesn’t cost money?
Throughout the whole month of June, Ann Arbor holds a summer festival right on U-M’s campus. It’s free to attend, and you get to enjoy various outdoor activities and entertainment, all while enjoying summer in Ann Arbor.
8. What is your most treasured possession?
My husband and I bought our first home last year. We have been putting a lot of work into it, and it’s an awesome feeling having a place that you can really personalize and feel good about your investment.
9. What is your favorite U-M tradition?
When students paint “the rock.” I drive by it every morning on my way to work, and I love seeing the creativity and different messages painted on it.
10. What is your most-used emoji?
I use the same two smiley face emojis all the time, and I’m also a big fan of the thumbs up emoji.
