Need a pick-me-up post studying? Read this!
In my opinion, March is probably the worst and best time to be in Ann Arbor. As the weather gets warmer, school gets harder and students are drowning in work. It is super important to take care of yourself when you start feeling stressed. Personally my favorite pick-me-up is getting a sweet treat in the middle or after my study sessions. So here I present to you my personal favorite places to get a sweet treat!
Dining Hall soft serve
As a first-year, I probably had more dining hall ice cream than I should have. I know it is super generic but I truly believe that you cannot beat the soft serve, especially at South Quad. With all of the options of toppings at your disposal and the option of having a cone or a cup you can truly have any combination you want. I was a personal fan of taking a cone and putting Oreos on the bottom while swirling vanilla ice cream into the cone. Also, a crowd-pleaser was putting rainbow sprinkles on top because who says no to sprinkles?
Michigan Creamery
Michigan Creamery is my all-time favorite place to go get ice cream. Any time I have an informal coffee chat or want to go get something with friends, I ALWAYS say that we should go here. They have so many delicious flavors that are truly unique and you can combine them any way you like. I love their portion sizing so much because I never feel as if I have had too little or too much. I think you are truly paying for what you are getting. They also offer Bearclaw coffee and gourmet chocolates from Gaylord, Michigan. So if you aren’t in the mood for ice cream you still have the option of getting a different type of sweet treat.
Ben & Jerry’s
While Ben & Jerry’s is very popular it isn’t my preferred option from this list. They offer all of their classic flavors and some exclusive ones. When I stop by, I usually get a waffle cone with one to two scoops because it just makes more sense. If I don’t want to head to the location on State Street, I sometimes just stop by 7/11 and buy a pint for the same price.
Insomnia Cookies
If you ever are in the mood for an ooey gooey cookie, this is the place to go. While they can be a little pricey, I think it is worth it to go get half a dozen for a nice little pick-me-up treat. My favorite cookie is their s'mores deluxe because of the chocolate chips and marshmallows baked into the chocolate batter. It has a great location on South University and there are always people, especially on the weekends, ordering cookies. They are truly crowd-pleasing cookies and always satisfy one's sweet tooth.
Washtenaw Dairy
While I know Washtenaw Dairy is pretty far from campus, I think they have the best donuts around Ann Arbor. They are very cake-like and have a ton of amazing flavors. I love their cinnamon sugar donut because it feels light but has so much flavor to it. Not many people take the hike to Washtenaw Dairy often because it is definitely more of a place you go to once in a while. I personally love to go there for more special occasions or when I have visitors in town because I think it really highlights some of the food scene here in Ann Arbor.
I think sweet treats are very important to making yourself feel better. I know that especially for me when I go to these places with my friends I instantly get into a better mood. I hope these recommendations are helpful and you find your favorite pick-me-up spot in Ann Arbor.
