Tips for building a healthy routine.

When building a healthy routine, it’s often recommended to make time for activities that bring balance and peace of mind. Adjusting to college life can be overwhelming, as classes, social commitments, and responsibilities pile up quickly. In the midst of it all, it’s important to take care of yourself, and one of the best ways to do that is by staying active. At the University of Michigan, there are countless opportunities to move your body, connect with others, and maintain your overall well-being.

On-campus Gyms

U-M offers several recreation facilities, each with plenty of options for physical activity. On Central Campus, you’ll find the Intramural Sports Building (IMSB) and the Palmer Field Temporary Facility (PFTF), which will soon be replaced by the new Hadley Family Recreation & Well-being Center. These spaces include pools, weight rooms, cardio equipment, and studio spaces for group classes. While they can get busy during peak hours, the variety of equipment and activities ensures there’s something for everyone.

Intramural Sports

Intramural (IM) sports are a fun, social way to stay active. You can sign up with a group of friends or join as a free agent to be placed on a team. With both recreational and competitive leagues, intramurals let you choose the level of intensity, whether you want a laid-back experience or a chance to unleash your competitive side. Another option is the Adaptive Sports & Fitness program, which includes drop-in, recreational, and competitive programming.

Nichols Arboretum

For a change of scenery, head to Nichols Arboretum, affectionately called “the Arb.” Accessible from several entrances, including Geddes Avenue and near Markley Hall, the Arb offers trails for walking, running, or biking, as well as open green spaces where students gather to play frisbee, study, or simply relax. It’s more than just an arboretum; it’s a community space where nature and student life intersect. A trailchair is also available and can be reserved at Nichols Arboretum by visiting in-person or calling ahead

Club Sports

If you’re looking for something a bit more structured, consider joining a club sport. With about 30 different teams to choose from, there’s likely a sport that matches your interests. While some clubs are competitive, many welcome students of all skill levels. For those who played sports in high school, club teams provide a great way to stay active while building friendships and finding community on campus.

Staying active as a first-year student at Michigan isn’t just about fitness — it’s about creating balance, reducing stress, and finding community in a new environment. Whether you prefer hitting the gym, playing on an intramural team, exploring the Arb, or joining a club sport, the university offers opportunities for every interest and skill level. Making movement a regular part of your routine will not only support your physical health but also enrich your overall college experience.
