Embracing the Arts at Michigan

The University of Michigan and the greater Ann Arbor area are meccas for student artists, both inside the classroom and out. From joining different artistic groups and student organizations to appreciating and supporting local artists, here are some tips and tricks for getting involved in the arts at U-M.

Inside the classroom

Michigan provides a host of different creative opportunities inside the classroom for credits and fulfilling requirements while also expressing yourself creatively. The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) houses classes in digital photography, introduction to dance, acting, drawing, music production, and everything in between, all available to students (even if you’re not majoring in the arts). After playing clarinet throughout high school, I joined the university band class to continue playing at a high level, meet like-minded people, and fulfill my creative expression requirements. These are great opportunities to gain a new skill and learn from highly accomplished artists.

Student organizations

Using events like Festifall and the Maize Pages website, it’s easy to find a student arts organization that suits your needs and interests. Non-majors and majors alike join together to dance, act, sing, write, and perform in the over 250 organizations that aim to make a difference and showcase their talents. There are cultural associations, art clubs, creative magazines, orchestras and bands, musical theater groups, film clubs, comedy clubs, a cappella groups, book clubs, and so much more. From meeting casually a few times a month to rehearsing for performances and competing at high levels, there is a club for every specific interest you may want to pursue. This is also a great way to meet new people that have the same interests as you!  For students not interested in joining, it’s important to support other Wolverines by going to student productions. Events are typically cost-friendly (some free with an Mcard), held on campus in locations like the Power Center, Hill Auditorium, or the Lydia Mendelssohn Theater, and are built with the hard work of fellow students and their organizations.

Ann Arbor

Ann Arbor is a vibrant city full of great artistic and cultural diversity. As a student, you can take advantage of so many opportunities to see touring artists, exhibitions, and performances. Using programs like the Passport to the Arts and other student discounts, it’s very accessible to go downtown and participate in the arts at venues within a walking distance to Central Campus. There’s something for everyone, from attending the Ann Arbor film festival at the Michigan and State Theaters and seeing comedians and local indie bands at The Blind Pig, to listening to classical musicians at the University Musical Society and discovering a new favorite artist at The Ark. Don’t miss out on these great events right here in Ann Arbor!

Get started

There are a plethora of ways to continue your love of the arts or discover new ways to creatively express yourself as a student at the University of Michigan. To begin your journey, the Arts at Michigan website is a great tool in navigating the arts. I encourage you to take a class in something you’ve always wanted to learn, meet people by joining a student arts organization, and remember to always support your local artists.
