A comprehensive guide from a U-M senior.
Winter in Ann Arbor is no joke. As a senior at the University of Michigan and a Midwest native, I’ve learned how to survive the brutal cold while still feeling comfortable and true to my personal style. If you're looking to winter-proof your wardrobe, here’s how to do it without breaking the bank or losing your individuality.
Before you start shopping for new pieces, take inventory of your current wardrobe. Pull out your sweaters, jackets, and scarves from years past and see what still fits and is in decent condition. Look for items you didn’t wear much last winter and ask yourself why. Maybe it didn’t keep you warm enough, or maybe you just didn’t love it anymore.
This step helps you avoid unnecessary purchases and identify any gaps you need to fill. Bonus tip: Donate what you no longer need! Ann Arbor has plenty of donation centers, like the Salvation Army on State Street.
Michigan winters are unpredictable, with temperatures dipping below freezing one day and sunny skies the next. That’s where layering becomes crucial. Start with a base layer like thermal tops or lightweight turtlenecks. These are perfect under a sweater or loose hoodie for insulation.
For your middle layer, chunky knit sweaters, flannels, or sweatshirts will keep you warm while still letting you experiment with colors and patterns. Finish with a sturdy outer layer — think puffer jackets, wool coats, or even a long parka for those blizzard-esque days.
Winter accessories are more than just cute — they’re a necessity (it’s a win-win)! Essentials like a versatile beanie, touchscreen-friendly gloves, and a thick scarf can make all the difference when you're trekking across the Diag to your 9 a.m. class.
Personally, I swear by fleece-lined leggings for wearing under wide-leg jeans. And don’t forget cozy socks to pair with your winter boots — keeping your feet warm is key to surviving Michigan’s icy sidewalks. Wool socks get the job done perfectly.
Walking around campus in winter requires boots that are both functional and fashionable. Look for waterproof boots with good traction, like Sorel or Columbia brands. If you want something more stylish for indoor events, Chelsea boots or ankle boots work great too.
Pro tip: Spray your boots with a waterproofing solution to protect them from Ann Arbor’s slush. Secondly, invest in a good pair of boot liners for extra warmth if your feet get especially cold.
Staying warm doesn’t mean sacrificing your style. Use winter as an opportunity to mix textures, experiment with layers, and embrace seasonal colors like deep greens, maroon, and navy.
One of my favorite winter style hacks is throwing on a bold, oversized coat over a monochrome outfit. It instantly elevates any look without compromising on warmth. Add colorful earmuffs or a warm headband for extra flair.
As college students, most of us can’t afford a brand-new winter wardrobe. That’s where secondhand shopping comes in. Places like The Getup Vintage on South Fourth Avenue or the SHEI student-run thrift shop have hidden gems waiting to be found (by you)!
Don’t overlook online options, too. Websites like Poshmark and Depop often have high-quality winter pieces at a fraction of their original price. Look out for end-of-season sales for winter gear that you can use now and next year.
Winter fabrics like wool and fleece require extra care to last. Wash your sweaters inside out on a gentle cycle and let them air dry to prevent pilling. For coats, consider dry cleaning them at least once during the season to keep them fresh and in good shape.
Also, if you’re dealing with salt stains on your boots, a simple mixture of vinegar and water can work wonders. Just dab it on with a cloth and wipe clean — it truly couldn’t be easier.
Finally, winter isn’t just about what you wear outside — it’s also about feeling cozy indoors. Stock up on fuzzy socks, soft hoodies, and loungewear sets for those days you just want to snuggle up with a cup of coffee or tea and binge your favorite show.
Winter in Ann Arbor can feel endless, but transitioning your closet doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With some smart planning and a little creativity, you can build a wardrobe that’s both practical and stylish.
So, pull out those sweaters, grab your favorite boots, and get ready to face the Michigan winter — one cozy layer at a time. Stay warm and Go Blue!
