Ways to relax, reconnect, and reflect over the holidays.
The winter semester is officially over, and for students at the University of Michigan, it’s a well-deserved break from finals week and studying. You’ve worked hard, now reap the rewards of another great semester in the books! In order to take advantage of the weeks off to recharge and prepare yourself for the winter semester to come, here are a few items to check off your to-do list before Jan. 8 rolls around.
Winter break is a time to relax. Of course it's important to spend time with family and celebrate the holidays over break, but it's equally vital to spend time decompressing. There’s never been a better time to sleep in past your alarm, binge that TV show you’ve been dying to watch, or read that book that’s collecting dust on your shelf. Don't forget that it’s also a good idea to unplug a bit, because staying updated on social media and endlessly scrolling through TikToks can be less than relaxing. Overall, take time to do what you enjoy and get the needed rest you may have been lacking during the semester.
While our campus is beautiful, it can sometimes feel like being trapped in a bubble, especially with the colder weather upon us. Take time to hang out with your family, friends from home, and your pets! Embrace the fact that you’re not stressing over a group project, poring over a study guide, or walking to lecture. ’Tis the season to take time for family and friends. Go grab coffee and catch up about school, catch new movie releases in theaters, or go ice skating. It’s especially important to embrace the winter weather and go outside to reconnect with nature. Walking on a trail while listening to music or a podcast is a great way to quiet your mind and mentally reset.
I can’t speak for every student, but 2024 has been a year of incredible change in my life. Before the ball drops on New Year’s Eve, I always prioritize taking time to think back on the year I’ve had. Think about the highs and lows, the moments that you’ll never forget, the people whom you spent those special moments with. Going back through your camera roll or reminiscing with those around you can be a great way to recap the year. Appreciate your personal growth and the goals you’ve accomplished in order to focus on the new year.
While you’re busy sticking to your New Year’s resolutions and packing your suitcase in January, start by getting yourself on the right track for the new semester. Make a list of clubs you want to check out at Winterfest, create a master list of assignments to prepare for, finalize your class schedule, and create a bucket list of goals to accomplish before the year is over. Finishing a school year strong begins with how you enter it, and an organized mindset can be just the thing that prepares you for the winter semester.
