Ann Arbor is an amazing city that the University of Michigan is lucky to call its home. Many credit the university for bringing life to the city but what happens when a majority of the students leave campus for the summer? While campus gets quieter, the city of Ann Arbor continues to hustle with fun activities. If you find yourself in Ann Arbor over the summer, don’t forget to take advantage of the simple pleasures. These are some of my favorite activities to do during the summer in the city.
The majority of the time that students are on campus for the academic year, the weather is largely unfavorable for being outside. However, during the summer Ann Arbor is perfect for outdoor activities. One of the best parts about Ann Arbor is the restaurant scene and during this time of year, many places open up their outdoor seating for diners to enjoy the weather. A must-go over the summer is Casa Dominick’s located between the Law Library and the Ross School of Business. This Ann Arbor staple has been around since the 1960s and continues to deliver a perfect summer experience. Dominick’s is an authentic Italian restaurant with an array of lovely outdoor seating including porches, balconies, and a large outdoor patio. It is the perfect place to relax and hang out with friends over the summer.
Many events are held over the summer, including the Ann Arbor Art Fair. This year it will be from July 18-20. The Ann Arbor Art Fair is renowned in the Midwest and draws crowds from all over the country. The attending artists are experts in various mediums, including painting, photography, ceramics, fiber art, jewelry making, sculpture, and beyond. It is a great place to just walk around and explore even if you aren't a huge art fan because there is something for everyone. The Ann Arbor Art Fair is a great way to find unique pieces and support local artists.
Another unique (and free) activity to partake in over the summer is the annual peony bloom in Nichols Arboretum. The Arboretum has a garden of about 10,000 peonies varying in color during its peak. It is an incredible sight to see and a great way to connect with nature. The Peony Garden is also right at the entrance to the Arboretum so after viewing, visitors can continue on a beautiful walk along the Huron River. The peonies are only in bloom from mid-May to the end of June so make sure to find time early on this summer.
Ann Arbor is an awesome city no matter the time of year, but the summers are a student favorite for a reason. If you are in town this summer, check out these amazing activities and explore the city further during the perfect weather.
