Michigan winters are known to be intense. While the snow-covered landscape is incredibly beautiful, the below-freezing temperatures that come with it can be challenging. It’s easy to focus on how cold it is or how quickly it gets dark, but there are plenty of ways to make the most of winter and keep your spirits high.

Dressing for Success (and Warmth)

Even if your walk to class is only a few minutes, staying warm is essential. Layer up with a warm base, add a sweater, and wear a heavy coat to protect against the cold. There’s nothing worse than arriving with wet sneakers after walking through snow, so invest in proper winter gear:

  • Waterproof boots with good traction
  • Warm socks, gloves, a hat, and a scarf
  • A thick, insulated coat

Even on dry days, the cold temperatures can take a toll, so make warmth and comfort a priority to stay healthy through the season.

Keeping a Cozy Space

Creating a warm and comfortable environment can make a big difference during the colder months. Many students decorate their spaces with fairy or LED lights and cozy blankets to make things feel more inviting. Blanket hoodies are also popular for staying warm while remaining mobile. Add soft pillows, fuzzy socks, or slippers to complete your winter setup – comfort can go a long way toward keeping your mood up.

Staying Active Even When It’s Cold

Staying active during winter is important for both physical and mental health. While outdoor activities may be limited, there are plenty of ways to move indoors. Campus gyms and recreational sports make it easy to stay active throughout the season. Yost Ice Arena also offers ice skating sessions for students – it is a great way to have fun with friends while getting some exercise.

Beating the Winter Blues

Regular activity is one of the best ways to fight off the winter blues, but there are a few more strategies to help. With less sunlight in the winter, consider using a daylight lamp for about 20 minutes a day to make up for the loss of vitamin D. Staying social is just as important. Spend time with friends, attend campus events, or explore cozy cafés around Ann Arbor.

Winter in Michigan may be cold and dark, but it’s also full of beauty and opportunities to slow down and enjoy simple comforts. By staying warm, active, and connected with others, you can make the season feel less daunting and more rewarding. Remember to take care of your physical and mental health as the temperatures drop. With the right mindset and a little preparation, you can truly thrive through even the chilliest Michigan days.
