We know that sometimes life challenges can make it hard to continue enrollment at the University of Michigan. Perhaps the best thing to do is to step away, take care of yourself, and put formal education on hold. If you are a former U-M student and now wish to return to the same school or college on the Ann Arbor campus, we would like to do all we can to help you complete your degree.

All returning students are encouraged to first schedule an appointment with their academic advisor to develop a re-entry plan.

Official transcript(s) of all academic work done at other institutions since leaving U-M should be submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at [email protected].

International students on temporary U.S. visa status (F-1 or J-1) who have missed a full year must contact the International Center to have their visa status updated.

Only complete our Readmit Application if either of the following apply:

  • You registered and withdrew after the first day of class of your first term at U-M, but before the drop/add deadline. Exception: Michigan Engineering students who have not taken any courses elsewhere since their original term of admission should contact Michigan Engineering's Office of Undergraduate Recruitment directly.
  • You completed a degree at U-M and wish to obtain a second degree within the same school or college.

Otherwise, most schools and colleges have their own readmission/reactivation process if you have not been enrolled in the past year. Information for readmission to the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) is listed below. If you were an undergraduate in another school or college, you should contact that school or college directly.

  • Students who have been away for less than two years should contact the Office of the Registrar at 734-647-3507 or at [email protected] to obtain an appointment for registration.
  • Students who have been absent from LSA for more than two years or have been deactivated may apply for reactivation.
  • Students who previously attended LSA and were academically suspended or recessed may apply for reinstatement after a one year absence. Students seeking reinstatement must also meet with a Student Success Advisor prior to the start of the term of re-enrollment or their registration may be canceled.

There are times when students need support in taking care of their health and well-being, which may have been a reason you are not currently enrolled. We want to make sure you have access to the support you need and encourage you to access mental health services.

If you have any outstanding financial obligations, please contact Student Financial Services (SFS) via email at [email protected]. SFS is committed to helping you continue and complete your education at U-M.
