Students applying to transfer to Michigan Engineering are required to complete prerequisite coursework in math, chemistry, physics, programming/engineering, and English. In addition, students must maintain an overall 3.0 GPA and earn a C or higher in all prerequisite coursework. The prerequisite courses are as follows:

  • MATH 115 - Calculus I
  • MATH 116 - Calculus II
  • Physics 140 and Physics 141: General Physics I w/ Lab
  • Chemistry 130, Chemistry 125, and Chemistry 126: General Chemistry w/ Lab
  • EECS 183 OR ENGR 101: Elementary Programming Concepts OR Introduction to Computers and Programming
  • ENGL 125: English Composition

Prerequisite Guides

The following guides have been developed using the Transfer Equivalency Guide to assist students in selecting coursework that will meet Michigan Engineering’s prerequisite requirements. Guides have been developed based on the sending institution and align with the requirements set by Michigan Engineering. Meeting the minimum GPA expectations and completion of prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of admission as each application is reviewed individually and holistically. For more information, please review our requirements and deadlines.

Using the Guides

Course equivalencies are based on the Transfer Equivalency Guide and are subject to change. It is the student’s responsibility to verify course expiration dates and transferability. For questions, contact [email protected]

Frequently Asked Questions

The guide lists two courses (ex. CHEM 101 + CHEM 102) that are required for the prerequisite. If I have only taken one, have I met the requirement?

No. Both courses are required to meet the prerequisite requirement. If you have only elected one of the two courses listed, you must elect the other course to receive directly transferable credit.

My current institution awarded me test credit for one of the prerequisite courses. Do I need to retake the course?

Test credit is only awarded for scores that meet the University of Michigan’s testing requirements. If your score does not meet the minimum for Michigan Engineering, this test score cannot be applied toward the completion of prerequisite coursework. Test score requirements for AP and IB exams are outlined in each guide.

I received transfer credit from previous institutions I’ve attended. My current institution awarded me transfer credit for one of the prerequisite courses, but the course is listed as departmental credit on the Transfer Credit Equivalency Guide. Do I need to retake the course?

Course transferability is determined based on where the course was taken, even if transfer credit was awarded at a current or previous institution. If the course is listed as departmental credit or non-transferable, this does not meet the prerequisite requirement.

What does “No directly transferable course offered” mean?

This language is used if no courses offered at the institution directly transfer to one of the Michigan Engineering prerequisite courses. We do not require that prerequisites are completed at the same institution, so students are encouraged to check nearby institutions for coursework that will directly transfer to our prerequisite requirements.

What is alternative coursework?

Alternative coursework is only available for the physics and chemistry prerequisite courses. Students may elect these courses in place of courses equivalent to CHEM 130, CHEM 125, CHEM 126, PHYSICS 140, and PHYSICS 141. These courses will still meet the prerequisite requirements for chemistry and physics.
